Day 15 – Risk Management 101! – by Kaushik Ganesh

Cyber Threats: A Quick Guide!
Cyber threats are malicious acts that seek to damage data, steal data, or disrupt digital life in general. Cyber threats can come from trusted users from within an enterprise or by unknown external parties. They can affect any computer system, network, or digital asset of an organization or individual.

Some emerging types of cyber threats are:
✤ Malware attack: A malicious software that can harm or control a computer system, such as viruses, worms, ransomware, spyware, etc.

✤ Social engineering attack: A technique that manipulates people into revealing sensitive information or performing actions that compromise their security, such as phishing, fake websites, impersonation, etc.

✤ Software supply chain attack: A type of attack that targets the software development and distribution process, by compromising the software vendors or distributors to deliver malicious code to unsuspecting users.

✤ Advanced persistent threat (APT): A sophisticated and stealthy attack that targets specific organizations for long-term objectives, such as espionage, sabotage, or extortion.

✤ Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack: An attack that overwhelms a server or network with a large amount of traffic from multiple sources, to disrupt the normal functioning of the service.

✤ Man-in-the-middle attack (MitM): An attack that intercepts the communication between two parties, to alter, steal, or manipulate the data.

✤ Password attack: An attack that tries to guess or crack the passwords of users or systems, to gain unauthorized access to their accounts or data.

✤ Injection attack: An attack that exploits a vulnerability in an application or database, by inserting malicious code or commands, to execute unauthorized actions or access sensitive data.

✤ Cryptojacking: An attack that secretly uses the computing resources of a victim to mine cryptocurrency for the attacker.

✤ Zero-day exploit: An attack that takes advantage of a previously unknown vulnerability in a software or hardware system, before the vendor or developer can fix it.

These are just some examples of cyber threats that exist today. There are many more types and variations of cyber threats that pose different challenges and risks to cybersecurity.
